The area and getting around
Located at the rear of St. Mary's churchyard, Ruskin lookout is the most famous landmark in the town. The lookout is on the high western bank of the River Lune and was described as “one of the most beautiful views in England” by the writer and artist John Ruskin. Overlooking the oak trees on the opposite bank, the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and rolling meadows, you can appreciate this wonderful panorama by just crossing the churchyard, or by climbing from the River Lune up the 'radical steps'. These were built by Dr Francis Pearson to divert the public footpath from his garden.
The Devil's FootprintThe Devil's Bridge, which crosses the River Lune to the south and east of Kirkby Lonsdale, is probably one of the town's most iconic landmarks. A visit to this bridge allows you to see the dent in the stone at the apex of the bridge, which is known as the famous Devil's hand print. The story of this mark tells of an old woman who lived by the river and whose cow strayed to the other side. Despite persuasion, the animal did not want to return. After this, the devil appeared to her and made a deal with the old woman. In exchange for building the bridge, the first soul to cross it would belong to the devil…
