The area and getting around
In the beginning Coniston was not a ‘’town’’ as it is known today, in fact, it started out as a simple rural settlement. It was not until 1859, when the old copper mines were reopened and upgraded, that the town began to flourish. Due to its location within the Lake District, many tourists come to visit this area because of its great natural beauty, but also because there are many places for outdoor activities. The village centre is quite modest, but has everything you need for your holiday, such as a café, supermarket, tourist centre, restaurants and friendly people who are always ready to help. It is definitely a place to relax in its peaceful atmosphere, and at the same time seek adventure in its natural areas.
A town with many pathsWhen travelling to Coniston, you will have many good options to consider. Firstly, if you wish to travel by air, you should be aware that you will not be able to get to this town directly, as the nearest airports are Manchester Airport and Glasgow Airport. However, you can always get to these points and rent a car to complete your road trip. But the best way to travel is by train, as the UK has a well-known and efficient train system, so for a more convenient option you may want to consider it. One of the nearest stations is Windermere, but there are also Carlisle, Penrith and Oxenholme. Finally, you can also simply take a bus from various parts of England, such as Hawkshead village, Ulverston and Ambleside. But don't worry, no matter how you decide to get there, you're sure to have a great time while enjoying the countryside and mountain scenery along the way.
Travellers and activities
There are many wonderful things people visit Coniston for, but Coniston Water is certainly one of the main ones. This beautiful lake is the third-largest lake in the whole district, five miles both long and wide, and once an important source of food for the monks who fished in its waters during the 13th and 14th centuries. During the months of March and November, you can take a ride on the lake via the Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola, a leisurely trip that will take you to see the three islands contained within the lake. Alternatively, you can simply spend the afternoon on the shores of the lake having a picnic, playing with your pet or fishing.
Coniston Water for history loversAs well as natural areas, Coniston is also home to some interesting historical sites. One of them is Brantwood, a beautiful house right on the banks of Coniston Water, which was once the home of English art critic John Ruskin. It is set amidst large acres of greenery, with a very traditional architecture of white walls and dark tiled roofs, giving it a lovely contrast. There are many things to do here, such as exploring every corner of the house, strolling through the gardens, visiting the contemporary art exhibitions on display, or grabbing a bite to eat in the popular cafés and tearooms.
The popular series of Swallows & Amazons books, by Arthur Ransome, was heavily inspired by Coniston Water.
