It was built in 1512 on the orders of Henry VIII and is one of the first castles in England to defend the south coast ports. The name Camber derives from the French word dormitory, meaning safe haven. The fortress was chosen because the English fleet could anchor ships safely at the rear of the castle. However, this was not necessary. During World War II, it was used by the British army as a warning place.
