A quaint country town in the middle of Ireland, Mullingar is both a destination in itself and a perfect base from which to explore the country. Lettings directly in the town are restricted to one modern apartment, but spread further afield and there are a number of lovely holiday rentals dotted around the surrounding countryside, such as on the shoreline of the Owel and Ennell lakes, a few kilometres to the north and south of the town respectively.

Mullingar is a small town surrounded by water. River Brosna circles around the quaint, pedestrianised town centre and offers lovely views over the traditional stone buildings and gentle walks through the lush, green landscape. The town is famous for its lakes, with Lake Ennell to the south and Lake Owel to the north, it is a paradise for water lovers. The town boasts some wonderful traditional pubs and restaurants, and makes a fine destination for a relaxing short break.

One of the main attractions of the town itself is the spacious Mullingar Park. A lovely place to take a relaxing walk, the park also includes numerous playgrounds, a large pond, and even a swimming pool. Mullingar Park was built in the 1960s, and over the years more facilities and attractions have been added. The latest additions include a skateboard park and even free wifi.

The area in and around Mullingar is extremely cyclist friendly. If you start in the town itself and follow the path as it loops around the canal, you head toward the Greenway Canal. A superb cycling path, it follows the old railway track past beautiful countryside, through a tunnel and under arched bridges. You can go off the track at various points to explore the neighbouring sights and villages along the way.

Of course, Ireland is world-renowned for its traditional pubs. Mullingar is no exception, and the pubs offer the finest pint of Guinness you will find anywhere, as well ask other authentic Irish beers celebrated around the globe. One of the best pubs here is Danny Byrnes due to its dynamic atmosphere, with live music and a big beer garden, and its wide variety of traditional beers on tap. The Old Stand is another town centre pub that offers a more cozy atmosphere and boasts universally excellent reviews. Ideal for a quiet chat over an authentic Irish beer. Other recommended pubs here include Con’s, Druid’s Chair, Clarkes Bar, and Chambers, all of which are completely authentic, and completely Irish.

If you want to give your taste buds a true treat, the Red Earth is a perfect spot for fine dining. Both the food and design here are exquisite and the outside seating area makes for a perfect spot on a sunny day. The Church Restaurant is another unique eatery, as it is located in an old, renovated church. A huge favourite among locals and tourists alike, prices are reasonable and the food is simply delicious.

There are some great sporting stadiums in Mullingar, with the highlight being the Greyhound Stadium. And what is more quintessential Irish than at night at the races? A great evening is to be had, and who knows, place your bet on your dog of choice, and maybe you will get lucky!

The Cathedral of Christ the King is located by the Mullingar centre next to the Royal Canal. At the altar area, the opulence of this building really hits you – every statue, picture, fitting, etc., is pristine. Take some time to take in the lovely floor and wall mosaics.
