The white sands and contrasting turquoise waters make it an ideal spot for surfers and swimmers. The transparent waters are also so clean that it has been awarded the Blue Flag. Keem Bay is also a paradise for other sports such as diving and windsurfing.

Croagh Patrick is undoubtedly one of the best places in May if you love walking. Nicknamed “The Reek”, Croagh Patrick is the fourth-highest mountain in the county and has a tricky climb to the top. However, it offers some of the best panoramic views in Ireland and plenty of places to rest if you need to. It is also considered Ireland's holiest mountain. But If you're looking for something a little less challenging, Erris Head Loop Walk is a spectacular walk and conservation area of about 5 km. Alternatively, the glorious Wild Nephin Ballycroy National Park also has trails to suit all levels of walkers.

With 42 km of traffic-free cycling lanes, the Great Western Greenway is a great choice for cyclists. An adventure along this stretch allows you to enjoy views of the Nephing Beg Mountains all the way to Croagh Patrick. The Greenway now takes cyclists from the town of Westport to Achill Island, Mayo's most popular cycling destination. Achill has narrow lanes with few cars, while Westport offers three routes of between 8 and 24 kilometres. The Clew Bay Bike Trail is also popular with experienced cyclists and runs through some of Mayo's most attractive towns along the coast of Clew Bay.

One of the most breathtaking places in Mayo is Downpatrick Head. See the Dún Briste sea stack jutting out of the ocean and watch the wild Atlantic waves at sunset. This wonderful stack is Mayo's premier natural spectacle and rises 38 metres above the sea. There are many legends describing how it was formed. However, the most famous one is that St Patrick drove all the vipers out of Ireland and struck the ground to rid the mainland of them.

Mayo offers some of the darkest and most pristine skies on the planet and is home to Ireland's first International Dark Sky Park. The park lies between the Nephin Ranges and the coast. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way, constellations, planets and over 4,500 stars! During your stay in May take advantage of the skies to see the meteor showers and twinkling stars.

Five miles (8.05 km) northwest of Ballycastle, Céide Fields is one of the most extensive and oldest Stone Age agricultural sites in the world. From stone walls, houses to megalithic tombs have been found here, showing the legacy of a farming people nearly 6000 years old. Explore the fields that cover the remains of hundreds of Stone Age farms and get a better glimpse of the past in the glass pyramid. Today, the remains of most of the walls are still hidden underground.

Brimming with antiques and works of art, Westport House is one of Ireland's finest examples of Georgian architecture and one of the most beautiful historic houses. This mansion was built on the ruins of Grace O'Malley's castle in 1730 and boasts four hundred acres of lush natural beauty. Explore the 18th-century historical exhibits, tour the stunning period rooms and wander through the secret walled gardens. The house also features an Adventure Park with a rollercoaster ride across a waterway.
