6. Church of Agios Nikolaos, an example of Byzantine culture
Spend a lot of time in the Agios Nikolaos church, it is north of the city, located on a small peninsula. This church is the oldest example of Byzantine architecture in the world. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is located on a huge rock in front of the harbour, from the church grounds you can enjoy magnificent views of the city, the sea and the Tsougrias islands. The decoration follows a natural and geometric pattern. The circles intersect to form brightly coloured leaves and tree trunks with many branches. Inside there are also diamond shapes and rosettes. This decoration was superimposed on the original figures of the church due to the Byzantine prohibition of decorating churches with icons. For an enriching and budget-friendly experience, consider staying in an affordable villa in Agios Nikolaos, where you can delve into the city's historical treasures and revel in the beauty of this ancient church.
