2. See the ancient Buckland AbbeyA 700 year old building, founded in 1278, which began as a Cistercian monastery and was modified when the monasteries were dissolved. In its beginnings it had a Great Granary preserved by the monks which today functions as a cider press. The abbey gardens are the perfect place to find peace with the sounds of nature and the most popular is the Elizabethan garden which is incredibly colourful. The original orchard where fruit and vegetables are harvested is still intact. You can buy snacks and drinks to take with you on the walk. In addition, pets are also welcome to explore the different trails.
3. Enjoy with your family at the fun-filled Pennywell FarmIt's a farm loaded with multiple activities from start to finish. There is animal practice every half hour, including racing the pigs. You can ride in a tractor, a trailer and a red rocket. The place is also used for breeding miniature pigs. Children will have the opportunity to collect eggs, feed the deer, milk some goats and race the ferrets. Get to know the international poultry collection in the Funky Fowl area.
4. Take a stroll through the unique Dartmoor Zoological ParkA park opened in 1968 and restored in 2007. The zoo has more than 70 species of different animals, including several endangered and critically endangered animals. In the park there is a special breeding programme with common marmosets, tapir, wallaby, among other animals. Some of the mammals and birds are the African lion, raccoon, capybara, golden pheasant, ostrich and rhea. Reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates include the royal python, milk snake, poison dart frog, salamander, sun beetle and tiger land snails.
5. Take a tour of the iconic Buckfast AbbeyIt is a monastery founded in 1018 under the rule of the Cistercian Order until the dissolution of the monasteries. It is now administered by a foundation of Benedictines. The abbey has a restaurant and a souvenir shop offering its own characteristic products such as honey, mead, beeswax, various handicrafts and a Buckfast tonic wine, the greatest speciality of the house. It is open to the public daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
