During the warmer months of the year, the Farnes become the most important place for a large wildlife habitat. It was built between 1392 and 1399, to defend a lawless country, when war between England and Scotland was endemic. It was one of 78 Pele Towers in Northumberland at the time of 1415. It is an uninhabited property, but fully furnished, as it must have been in the 14th century. Discover the authentic St Cuthbert's ChapelIn 678 AD, Inner Farne Island was home to St Cuthbert, after nearly 12 years as Prior of Lindisfarne, he retired to Inner Farne until he became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 684 AD. His health deteriorated until he was forced to return to the island, and he died on 20 March 687 AD. In 1370, a church was built on the island of Inner Farne in his honour. The chapel is Grade II listed and is included in England's National Heritage List.

Its construction was completed in 1826 because of the need for light on the islands to warn ships of the surrounding dangers, its original name was Outer Farne Lighthouse and its creation allowed it to complement the earlier Inner Farne Lighthouse. To tour the lighthouse, you can only do so on board a boat and the only ones authorized by Trinity House are The Golden Gate Boat Trip Company.
