Travellers and activities
There are many interesting highlights to discover in this village, and the following is one, if not the most important, of them all. If there is one thing that defines the town of Cromford, it is this historic site, The Cromford Mills. They are considered to be the first mill in the world to be powered solely by water power, which caused a worldwide revolution. It was created by the industrialist Richard Arkwright in 1771, and today, thanks to the help of volunteers, it is a tourist attraction of great historical importance. You can stroll through this fabulous complex, which before Arkwright's renovation used to be a textile company, and discover what a great innovation this system was. In addition, you will also find gift shops, restaurants, occasional events, workspaces, and educational facilities.
Cromford for hiking loversIf you now want a change of scenery and to explore the beautiful English countryside in-depth, Black Rocks is for you. This sandstone outcrop has become a popular hiking and climbing area, with routes suitable for beginners and professionals alike. Along the route, you will encounter interesting landscapes and natural environments, from coniferous forests, plants that support the lead found in the area, and of course sandstone and limestone deposits. Now, some of the trails you can take include the High Peak Trail, which, although it doesn't have Black Rocks as its final destination, is one of its main stops and an excellent guide to the summit. Alternatively, if you prefer something calmer, you can take the short trail to Sheep Pasture Top, which rises to over 500 feet, giving you fantastic views of the Matlock Gorge.
If you want to go to Cromford when it's warmer and drier, make sure to visit during the month of July, as temperatures can reach 67 °F.
