Time for Climate Action

Climate change has become one of the most pressing issues, not only because of the immense damage that we are already experiencing but also because of the irreversible consequences expected for the planet in the coming years.

With the aim of raising awareness and working towards reducing our carbon footprint, Holidu has decided to take part in “Time for Climate Action”, a campaign organized by LFCA (Leaders For Climate Action). The initiative seeks to educate and encourage people, through different actions, to reduce their CO2 emissions. 

The campaign takes place during Earth Week, from April 18th to 25th, with a goal of reaching 100 million people in Europe and empowering them to take action. Holidu will support by highlighting the campaign on its website and giving more visibility to sustainable vacation rentals. Internally, we will be organizing various activities such as a bicycle repair workshop, a vegan dinner, and workshops facilitated with the help of Climate Fresk to better understand the implications of climate change and what is needed to take action.

How can you participate?

We know that sustainability is important for travelers. According to a survey we conducted in 2021, 85% of participants consider sustainability to be important to them when planning their vacations (survey 07/29 – 08/19/2021).

So, here are five actions you can take on your next adventure to reduce the carbon footprint of your trip:

1. Stay in an eco-friendly vacation rental

When planning your next vacation, your choice of accommodation can contribute to mitigating climate change. On Holidu you can search for properties that have the “Eco” badge which signifies that it has at least eight sustainable amenities, such as green energy or water-saving systems.

On the side of vacation homeowners, there are already a number of them equipping their properties with solar panels, replacing their light bulbs with LED technology, and even offering natural, instead of chlorinated, pools.

2. Buy local

One of the easiest ways to reduce your trip’s carbon footprint is by eating local and seasonal products. Doing so means the products haven’t had to travel unnecessarily far to reach your mouth! In addition, by favoring produce from local markets, you’re not only eating fresh but also helping small businesses and contributing to the local economy in the process.

3. Get around by bike

If you are planning your next trip, whether it is to get to know a city or to connect with nature, doing so by bike is a sustainable way to do so. The fact that it also reduces stress and gives you an opportunity to exercise is a bonus!

4. Using reusable on-the-go water bottles

Whether on a trip to the mountains or the beach, avoiding single-use plastics can help reduce your carbon footprint. Doing so will not only limit the number of plastic bottles ending up in local landfills but will also help you save money over time.

5. Move to a sustainable bank

If you want to pay for your travel in a more sustainable way, it is now possible to find banks that seek to offer more environmentally friendly products and services. The best way to avoid having your money harm the environment is to work with a bank that does not finance the fossil fuel industry.
