Inbaal Honigman, celebrity psychic and astrologer, explains: “Our personality types broadly divide to temperamental, emotional, practical or intellectual, or to use their elemental synonyms – fiery, water, earthy or airy. Those characteristics show themselves in our astrological signs and have quite a noticeable influence on who we are during our holidays, a time when we are really free to be ourselves.

“Fire signs like Aries, Leo and Sagittarius love to keep active and need a holiday that gets them sweating. Water signs like Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces love a restful holiday surrounded by their favourite people. Earth signs like Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn enjoy a vacation with a touch of luxury. Air signs like Gemini, Libra and Aquarius go for a break that challenges the mind.”

Inspired by this, we’ve found out the best places for each star sign to visit this year, ranking cities around the world on a factor that each sign values or is inherent to their personality.

From an adventure near water for Pisces, to a year-round warm climate for Leo, check out the best 2023 travel destinations for every zodiac sign below.

Gemini

Those born under the sign of the Twins are sociable and bubbly, enjoying engaging with multiple friendships, acquaintances, and people they met once in a bar. Therefore, Gemini’s will love a destination where they can meet lots of new people, so we looked at the population density of cities to find out where they have the greatest opportunity.

According to the data, Melbourne, Beirut and Mumbai are all great destinations to visit for Gemini, with population densities of 24,159, and 21,881, and 21,000 per square kilometre respectively. These cities are actually almost double the population densities of most of the other destinations on the list, so you’re bound to find someone to befriend.

For sociability, Gemini’s should avoid Dubai, Reykjavik, and Faro as these are some of the least densely populated cities and offer the least potential for making new friends. Lovely if you want to have a quiet getaway, but perhaps not for the sociable Gemini.

Aries

Those born under the sign of the Ram are active beings who find themselves getting bored quickly and can find their attention wandering easily if not they’re not entertained. So, to keep Aries’ on their toes, we looked at the number of ‘5* Things To Do’ on Tripadvisor to find out which destinations offer the most activities.

The data points to London, Rome, and Paris being great destinations for Aries. London took the lead by a considerable amount, with over 2,000 ‘things to do’ rated 5* on Tripadvisor, including Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. If you’re looking to discover historical sites that date further back than these, consider Rome and visit the likes of the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. Other European destinations in the top ten include Lisbon and Athens, with Kathmandu, Hanoi, New York, and Delhi being those further afield.

Best travelling partners: “Always on the go, Aries would enjoy an active holiday with the non-stop, sociable sign Gemini, or a sporty retreat with fellow fitness lover Virgo.”

Taurus

Those born under the sign of the Bull are said to be the biggest foodies out of all of the zodiacs, enjoying a mix of high-quality food and eating for comfort. Taking this, we looked at the number of Michelin-Guide restaurants in each city to find out where Taurus’ can have the best culinary experiences.

So, for this foodie star sign, Paris, New York, and Tokyo being the best options, with these three cities having the most Michelin-Guide restaurants of any cities in this study and in the world. Paris currently has ten three-star, fourteen two-star and over 100 one-star restaurants, not to mention hundreds of others that are ‘Michelin Guide’ recommended – the ideal place for food-loving Taurus.

Best travelling partners: “With traits of being calm and peaceful, Taurus would love a relaxing holiday with quiet Libra, or a de-stressing retreat with fellow peace lover Aquarius.”

Leo

Those born under the sign of the Lion are not ruled by a planet but instead by the sun, so it’s unsurprising that this sign prefers the heat over cold. So, to chase the weather, we looked at the average temperature of the destinations to find out which offers the balmiest conditions all year round.

According to the data, the two best destinations for warm weather are Bangkok and Oman, which both have an average temperature of 28.9 degrees celsius year-round. In fact, Asia came out on top as the best continent for Leo, being home to nine out of the top ten countries. In Europe, Seville in Spain offers the warmest weather year-round with an average temperature of 18.6 degrees celsius.

And, for a star sign where heat is your thing, Canadian and Scandanavian cities are probably those to avoid as they serve up the coldest average annual temperatures.

Best travelling partners: “Luxe shops and meals delight a Leo, a preference they share with Capricorn, who also adore quality over quantity. Leo also likes to be well looked after on holiday, as does Taurus who appreciates excellent service.”

Scorpio

Those born under the sign of the Scorpion enjoy discovering unusual destinations and experiencing one-off places. That’s why we’ve looked at the number of Tiktok views of each city, with the lowest being the best, in order to discover destinations that are unspoilt by social media.

And it’s remote Reykjavik that takes the top spot, and Iceland’s capital is definitely unspoilt. As a whole, the country only has a population of just over 360,000 spread across a country more than twice the size of Denmark and, comparing this to other destinations, Iceland sees a lot fewer visitors each year on average for its size land mass.

Further down in the top 10 are the likes of Palma de Mallorca and Faro, which, despite how well known they are, both offer the ‘exclusivity’ that Scorpio desires as most people just fly into these cities to reach nearby beach destinations rather than exploring the destination itself.

Best travelling partners: “Keeping a holiday private isn’t easy in our social-media world so Scorpios will appreciate travelling with Gemini, who can also be discreet. Fellow water sign Pisces will also like to keep things chill on holiday, with their agreeable and forgiving personality.”

Capricorn

Those born under the sign of the Sea-Goat value history and time, and have a more classic approach to the world. So, for a sign that values tradition, we have looked at the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in each city to find out which have the most sites marked for having cultural or historical significance.

Coming out in the top spot for tradition-loving Capricorn is Beijing, with China’s capital being home to 6 UNESCO sites including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. Less far afield, London took second place and Madrid in third, home to 5 and 4 UNESCO sites respectively. Brussels also has 4 UNESCO sites, but it scored lower in the rankings as Belgium, as a whole, is home to less of these significant sites overall than Spain.

Aquarius

Those born under the sign of the Water-Bearer tend to be original and a little bit quirky, and it’s not uncommon for them to embrace their creativity and uniqueness. When it comes to holidays, we analysed where has the highest number of art galleries to explore, and places where this sign can seek inspiration and let their imagination run free.

Such a creative sign should consider a trip to Japan’s capital, Tokyo – the city home to the most art galleries with a total of almost 500. It’s an ideal destination for Aquarius thanks to its rich, traditional culture and cutting-edge, contemporary art and architecture. From trick art to renovated bathhouses, there really is something to suit every taste. In Europe, London, Istanbul, Paris and Amsterdam are also good destinations for Aquarius, all scoring in the top ten and each offering well over 100 art galleries to explore.

Libra

Those born under the sign of the Scales are said to be elegant beings and appreciate the beauty of life. So, for a sign that is so aesthetically driven, we looked at the number of photographs taken of each city on Instagram as a way of establishing just how ‘photo-worthy’ and easy on the eye it is.

According to the data, it’s London that is the best travel destination for beauty-seeking Libras, with its blend of ornate, historical buildings and looming, modern structures, not to mention the quintessential red phoneboxes and open-top buses. Other Instagram-worthy sites in the iconic city include Columbia Road Flower Market, Notting Hill, and the breathtaking views from its many skyscrapers.

Alongside London, the top 10 includes the other European cities of Paris, Istanbul, Cologne and Barcelona, and Jakarta and Dubai in Asia, as well as three US cities; New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

Best travelling partners: “Gentle Libra will enjoy travelling with easygoing and sensitive Cancer. Organised Virgo will also be a great trip-mate for Libra, as they both like to plan ahead.”

Cancer

Those born under the sign of the Crab are, like Leo’s, unique as they are not ruled by a planet and are instead ruled by the moon. With such a strong connection to the celestial body, we analysed the light pollution levels in each city to find out which destinations offer the most direct and, well, least polluted connection to the night sky and the moon itself.

The overall winner was Winterthur in Switzerland, a small city northeast of Zurich and close to the German border, which had the lowest levels of pollution. Interestingly, Switzerland actually secured three of the top ten positions. And the Scandinavian capital cities also placed well for this too, with Reykjavik, Helsinki, and Stockholm taking the second, third and fourth places respectively.

Outside of Europe, Adelaide and Muscat also made the top ten list. The cities with the most light pollution too, include Giza, Lagos, Lima, and Mumbai, whose scores of over 70 are quite a contrast to Winterthur’s score of 16.67.

Best travelling partners: “Family-loving Cancer needs a holiday that suits all generations, just like Aquarius, who wish to cater to everyone. Cancer enjoy seaside holidays, as they’re a water sign, like Pisces who also love the beach.”

Virgo

Those born under the sign of the Virgin are said to have an appreciation of organisation and structure is important to them. So, for a sign that values efficiency, we decided to look at the inefficiency of each city, specifically when it comes to traffic, to find out which destinations are most likely to offer the most organised travel experience.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is a German city that has taken the top spot, Hannover, with two other German cities securing a top ten position; Frankfurt and Dresden. Other European cities that will delight the Virgo appreciation of efficiency are Basel, Malaga, and Poznań. Further afield, Dakar was the only top ten city not in Europe, scoring in 5th place for traffic efficiency. Interestingly, the two most inefficient cities when it comes to traffic are San Francisco and Los Angeles, where there are traffic jams and bottlenecks a plenty.

Sagittarius

Those born under the sign of the Archer are free-spirited and gregarious. They want a destination where they are free to go wild. To fulfil the Sagittarius sense of adventure, we’ve looked at the number of tourist arrivals to a country, finding out which destinations many haven’t visited before.

In first place is Nepal, a country that is famous for being home to the highest mountain in the world, Everest – something that definitely makes it a great destination for those seeking adrenaline. In second and third place are Bolivia and Senegal, two further destinations that aren’t featured in many people’s travel portfolio yet offer much to explore.

For destinations less far afield, Sagittarius will enjoy visiting lesser discovered European countries including Serbia in 5th place and Iceland in 10th, as well as Finland and Slovenia taking 11th and 17th place respectively. Countries with the highest number of tourist arrivals each year, and which are definitely on the road much travelled, are France, the United States, China, and Spain, in that order.

Pisces

Those born under the sign of the fish are often true to their sign and seek out water when travelling. With such a strong connection to H2O, we found out which countries have the highest amount of internal freshwater resources, including internal river flows and groundwater from rainfall.

Being home to the largest river and perhaps the most well-known rainforest in the world, it might not come as a surprise that Brazil came out on top for Pisces. The South American country was closely followed by Canada, which is considered a freshwater-rich country, discharging close to 9% of the world’s renewable water supply whilst also boasting the longest coastline of any country in the world. Closer to home, Norway is the best European country for Pisces, in 15th place, followed by Turkey in 20th and France in 23rd.

As being close to the water is important for this sign, they should consider avoiding the Arab countries of Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates who all scored 0, as well as landlocked European countries including Hungary and Serbia.

Best travelling partners: “Their love of the water is shared by Cancer, who would make a wonderful companion to a waterside vacation. They’ll also find common ground with a Scorpio holiday mate, who enjoy complete relaxation with no phones.”

Methodology

To find out the best destinations for each star sign, we first collated a list of all of the main cities in each country in the world and then analysed each on the below factors:

• Gemini: Population density of the city, with this sign being super sociable
• Aries: Number of ‘5* things to do’ on Tripadvisor, with this sign typically getting bored quickly
• Taurus: Number Michelin Guide restaurants, with this sign being the ‘foodie’ sign
• Leo: Average annual temperature (the hotter, the better), with this sign seeking warm weather. Where there were joint positions, we have given weighting to those cities with a higher ‘average high temperature’.
• Scorpio: Number of Tiktok views (the lower, the better), with this sign liking to discover places unspoilt by social media.
• Capricorn: Number of UNESCO World Heritage sites, as this sign is associated with tradition and history. Where there were joint positions, we have given weighting to those with more UNESCO sites in the country in which the city is situated.
• Aquarius: Number of art galleries on Tripadvisor, with this sign being original and creative
• Libra: Number of Instagram photos on city hashtag, with this sign appreciating beauty and aesthetics
• Virgo: Traffic inefficiency, as this sign appreciates organisation and structure
• Sagittarius: Tourist arrival numbers (the lower, the better) as this sign likes enjoys adventures and places not many have ventured. This is a county-level ranking.
• Pisces: Internal freshwater resources, as this sign stays true to itself and likes to be near water. This is a county-level ranking.

We used a variety of credible sources to find data for each of the above categories including World Data Bank, OECD, and Statista, and then ranked the cities from first to last based on this data.

Cities, where a full dataset was not available, were omitted from the index.
