The Acropolis is the most important archaeological sight both in Greece and one of the most important in the world. Most of its buildings were built 2,500 years ago, and in addition to the infamous Parthenon, the complex includes several well-preserved buildings such as the stunning Temple of Erechtheion. The Acropolis opens at 8 in the morning and this is the best time to visit. Head straight up to the upper part and enjoy the Parthenon and other temples in peace before the crowds arrive.

Located at the foot of the Acropolis, the picturesque Plaka district is the oldest neighbourhood in the city, and still retains the charm of traditional Greece with narrow labyrinthine streets, beautiful blue and white 19th century facades and old taverns where you can feast on delicious local treats such as moussaka and gyros. Plaka is also a great place to pick up nice souvenirs to take back home with you.

At the top of Mount Lycabeto, at 227 meters, you will find the best viewpoint in the city that looks like a giant urban carpet that has been spread over the hills. One hour before nightfall is the best time to go to watch the sun set dramatically behind the Acropolis. There is a funicular if you don’t fancy the climb.

They say that to get to know a city you must visit its markets, and Athens is no exception! At Central Market you will get closer to the local life of the city. Located in a 19th century neoclassical building, the market exudes chaotic eastern flavour, with vendors shouting at full voice and hordes of people making their way through the narrow corridors between the stalls.

Psiri is the city's fashionable neighbourhood and is now known as the SoHo of Athens. It is one of the favourite areas for locals to go out for a drink, shop in its designer stores or take a quiet stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the most touristy neighbourhoods.

The National Garden is a huge park located just behind the parliament and a true oasis within the city. It is so big that you can easily find your very own corner, where you can enjoy a picnic surrounded by exotic plant species from around the world. An authentic holiday experience!
