The Archaeological Museum of the District of Lemesos was founded in 1948 with a section in the Castle of Lemesos. In 1972, a new modern museum was built, and the first gallery exhibition was organized for March 1975. The building consists of two rooms, the first room exhibits artefacts from earlier phases of Cyprus' history such as the hippopotamus and pygmy elephant, finds from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age, material from Amathous and its surrounding sanctuaries, a group of terracotta’s, a limestone statue of the Egyptian god Bes, among others; the second room houses ceramics, sculptures, glass and ivory objects, funerary inscriptions and lamps.
