Travellers and activities
What can you expect from an island? It's a Caribbean jewel filled with fine, golden sandy beaches. Anguilla's main beach and one of the most popular in the Caribbean is Shoal Bay East, a long, wide stretch of white sand. Perfect for swimming and snorkelling, its waters provide one of the most beautiful coral gardens on the island. You can visit some of the restaurants that line the shore and sample some local cuisine.
Anguilla for culture loversNear Shoal Bay is the Fountain Cavern, a site discovered by the Amerindians over 1500 years ago. It is Anguilla's main archaeological site, a true natural and cultural wonder. Two large freshwater pools and some Amerindian petroglyphs are located 15 metres underground in a cave. Legend has it that Fountain Cavern was the main regional place of worship and home of pilgrimage for the Amerindians. The inhabitants of the island named it "The Fountain" because even during the most terrible droughts it has served as a source of drinking water.
Did you know that the name of the island comes from its shape? Anguilla is a fish with an elongated body, very similar to that of a snake. Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1493 and with the arrival of the British the name was changed to the English version, Anguilla
