1. Climb to the Venetian castle

   The Venetian castle sits on the headland dividing the town beaches from Valtos, reached by a stepped lane through the Old Town. Inside the walls, cypress trees and stone paths lead to gun emplacements and a terrace with the whole bay laid out below. Come in the late afternoon, when the heat has dropped and the light turns the rooftops gold — the walk back down through the shops takes about ten minutes.

2. Swim at Valtos and Lichnos

   Parga's two big beaches sit either side of the headland. Valtos is the long sandy one, with sunbeds, pedalos and tavernas at the water's edge, while Lichnos is quieter, greener and backed by cliffs with small sea caves to paddle into. Families wade the shallow stretches on foot, and rafting and horse-riding operators work the deeper sections upstream. Bring water shoes: the riverbed is stony, and the temperature is a genuine shock after a morning in the sun.

5. Step into the Necromanteion

   Above the village of Mesopotamos stand the ruins of the Necromanteion, the oracle of the dead where pilgrims once came to speak with departed relatives. Vaulted underground chambers and thick polygonal walls survive, and the setting above the Acheron delta explains the myth better than any museum. It pairs neatly with the river springs on the same half-day drive.

6. Day trip to Paxos and Corfu

   On a clear morning you can see the Ionian islands from the castle walls. Day boats from Parga's harbour run to the blue caves and harbours of Paxos, while ferries from nearby Igoumenitsa reach Corfu in well under two hours. Further south, Lefkada makes an easy overnight extension if you fancy a second base.
