The dramatic volcanic landscape of the Canary Islands is ideal for walkies, and there are some excellent hikes for you to try. One of the best trails on the island is the Volcán Calderón Hondo, a 4.5-km walk that will take you right to the top of a volcano. This is a looping trail. If you go counter-clockwise, you'll have a gentler slope to climb and a steeper descent; go clockwise for a tough ascent but an easy way down. Near the town of Corralejo, you can go for a walk through the sand dunes; just make sure to keep away from the edges of the natural reserve where birds make their nests. The walk from Presa de las Peñitas to the Ermita de la Peña takes about an hour, and is gentle enough for even small dogs to tackle. It also offers some of the best views on the island along the way.
