They are the largest waterfall in Europe, since more than 15,000 years ago the Upper Rhine left its bed behind and changed it into a new watercourse 150 metres wide and 23 metres deep. Opened in 1929 and since 2004 it houses 4,000 animals of 340 species. The zoo has spaces designed as close as possible to the natural habitats of all the fauna found there, allowing them to move around freely. Visitors are also encouraged to come into direct contact with the animals. The most popular event is the penguin walk which takes place on days when the temperature remains below 10 °C.

It is a lakeside fortress with a tower that pays homage to medieval times and a smaller tower set between the waters of Lake Thun. The fortress dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. Inside, it preserves some neo-gothic dining rooms, a Turkish smoking room, knight's armour, a museum and one of the most luxurious parks in the Alpine region.
