Dundee for astronomy loversThe Observatory Mills was founded in 1935 and is the first of its kind in the UK. It is distinguished by its attractive 7-metre dome which houses a Victorian-style refracting telescope, a small planetarium and exhibition areas. The building's architecture is classical in style and has a papier-mâché dome, an example of this model of construction that is treasured in the UK. The observatory has three telescopes, a Dobsonian reflector, a Cooke refractor, older than the building, made in York by Thomas Cooke, and a 300 mm telescope located in the dome. The planetarium has a seating capacity of 20 and can display about 1000 stars, the Milky Way, the bodies of the solar system and different galaxies. Next to the building, there is a 350 mm path that represents the positions of the bodies of the solar system to scale by means of a series of milestones. Access to the facilities is free of charge.
Did you know that Dundee is the UK's first city of design? In 2014 it was named by UNESCO thanks to all the innovations.
