Windermere Lake Cruises has a tight schedule of trips on old-fashioned steamboats or modern tourist boats. If you only want to see a part of the lake, the 45-minute boats leave from Bowness Pier every half hour during the summer. But if you can't get enough of those forested island and mountain views, take longer trips from Bowness to Lakeside on the lake's south shore, about 90 minutes.

6. Tour Brant FellLocated behind Bowness-on-Windermere, Brant Fell is 192 meters high and has a wonderful perspective of the lake. As the name suggests, this 3.5-mile circular hike takes you away from the busy lakefront, in summer. The climb can be quite steep in places, through woods and open fields to a bare summit, stopping at a lookout point at Post Knott along the way.
