The Lake District, where the town of Patterdale is located, is surrounded by lakes, as the name suggests, and is surrounded by a variety of lush green mountains. One of the largest lakes in the English area is Ulls Water, 9 miles long, 1 kilometre wide and 60 metres deep. It was formed after the last ice age by a glacier that carved deep into the valley and subsequently filled with water from the melt. It is an old defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britain that was begun in 122 during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It stretched from near the North Sea to the Irish Sea. From north to south, the wall included a moat, a military road, a rampart, a moat with adjacent monticules and a vallum. This is the best preserved Roman archaeological ensemble in Britain, as its main function was to defend the area from the military. Much of the wall is still intact and can be walked along the adjacent road.
