Travellers and activities
The valley is one of the few major valleys in the Lake District that does not have its lake, although there are several tarns on both sides of the valley. This is the only place in England where the mountains almost plunge into the sea. It is a mixed and dramatic landscape, stretching from steep and rugged volcanic uplands to gentler and wider land to its open tidal estuary at Ravenglass. Adventurers are spoilt for choice, with multiple locations among these picturesque mountains to explore. Itineraries can be arranged for waterfall walks, kayaking and canoeing, wild swimming and scuba diving in the lakes, as well as extensive walks throughout the area.
Eskdale for culture loversEskdale resonates with its past, some clues to the past are bold and obvious, such as the dramatic Roman fort at Hardknott Pass, while others require more detective work. High up the mountain, overlooking Berkeley, is another striking but largely unknown landmark of this era: the town of Barnska. This is a pair of long stone avenues that eventually formed a small town with over 400 cairns, hut circles and fences. The best time to visit this place is in spring when there are few ferns.
Did you know that Eskdale is part of the Lake District's main radial valleys? It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the North West of England.
