Founded in the 8th century B.C., Naples was among the most important cities of Magna Graecia and exerted considerable commercial, cultural and religious influence on the surrounding Italic populations. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, in the 8th century, the city formed an autonomous duchy independent of the Byzantine Empire; later, from the 13th century and for about six hundred years, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples, and then became the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons until the Unification of Italy.
Home to the Federico II, Europe's oldest state university, it is also home to the Orientale, the continent's oldest university of sinological and oriental studies. The birthplace of the Neapolitan language, Naples has played and continues to play a strong role in numerous fields of knowledge and culture. Naples is also the cradle of the figurative arts: original architectural and pictorial movements were born here, such as Caravaggism, the Posillipo school and Neapolitan Art Nouveau, as well as minor but internationally important arts, such as Capodimonte porcelain and the Neapolitan nativity scene.
It is the origin of a distinctive form of theatre and a distinctive culinary tradition that includes foods that have become global icons, such as the Neapolitan pizza: in particular, the art of its pizza makers has been declared an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
In 1995, the historic centre of Naples was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its exceptional monuments, which bear witness to the succession of cultures of the Mediterranean and Europe.
The central railway station is a 15-minute walk away, while Naples Capodichino Airport can be reached in about 20 minutes by car.
