Location and Area
Idyllically situated in a large cottage style garden with its 500 year old yew tree and surrounded by beautiful National Trust countryside, in this picturesque seaside village. A delight for birdwatchers, with gold crests in the yew tree, buzzards and peregrine falcons soaring the skies above the cottage.
Branscombe’s splendid beach with its pretty licensed restaurant, beachside café and shop is a five minute drive away. There’s lots to see on a walk to the beach through the village: a host of picturesque cottages, St Winifreds, a beautiful Norman church, an interesting working iron forge, the former bakery of the village, now a National Trust property serving homemade fare from its amazing old kitchen. There’s even an ancient working water mill that can be visited on certain days. The Mason Arms Inn is located at this end of the village offering a varied and appetising menu – a charming and characterful old building with a suntrap beer garden with its notable sign, “Now Ye Toil Not”.
Many wonderful walks on the doorstep, along the spectacular Jurassic coastline and inland too in the wooded coombes, valleys and pastures with their abundance of wildflowers in the hedgerows. The Donkey Sanctuary, famous for housing thousands of donkeys in acre upon acre of undulating pastureland is close by. It’s free and well worth a visit.
The picturesque fishing village of Beer and the Regency coastal town of Sidmouth, with all its amenities are just a short drive away.
Yew Tree Cottage is a truly idyllic retreat for all seasons!
